Tips To Prevent Tattoo Sunburn

Tattoos involve coloring pigment on the top layer of your skin and just because the skin has ink doesn’t prevent it from getting a sun burn on your tattoo! During the summer, it’s very common for people to get sun burns on tattoos, especially since regular sunscreen lacks the advanced properties needed to keep tattoos completely safe when exposed to the sun for long periods of time.

You should always apply sunscreen on your tattoo once it has passed the healing stage to protect it from sun burns and fading. So, once your tattoo has passed the healing time, you should apply sunscreen on the tattoo. The best option is to buy SPF 30 to 50 for tattooed skin. Since no sunscreen can block 100% of UV rays, buying SPF products over 50 is usually not a good value.

  • Damaging Sun Burns for Tattoos

Sunburned tattoos are caused by overexposure to the sun and can damage the skin, including inflammation, discoloration and the appearance of bullae. Sunburned tattoos can also cause itching, burning and sometimes pain. Sunburns on your tattoo can take longer to heal than regular sunburns on non-tattooed skin. There are two types of ultraviolet rays that come from the sun: UVA, and the other is UVB. These two UV rays will have different effects and can damage your tattoo in different ways.

  • UVA rays effect for tattoo

UVA rays penetrate your skin much deeper than UVB rays. So, the damage from UVA rays will last longer. These rays can also affect the different types of ink used to prepare the tattoo. If the tattoo ink is thinner, it may fade faster than dark ink due to sun burns. Pastel and white inks will fade the fastest.

  • UVB rays effect for tattoo

UVB rays will affect the top layer of your skin and most tattoo sunburns are caused by UVB rays. This is one of the main reasons why you need to use sunscreen specifically for tattoos. Most sun beds have a combination of UVA and UVB rays.

Here are some tips to prevent tattoo sunburn

Wait for Healing: First of all, make sure your tattoo is fully healed before exposing it to direct sunlight. This usually takes about 2-4 weeks, but may vary depending on the size and location of the tattoo. Consult your tattoo artist for specific tattoo healing instructions.

Sunscreen is Your Best Friend: Invest in a high-quality sunscreen with a high SPF rating (at least SPF 30 or higher). Apply enough sunscreen on the tattooed area before going outside. Make sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

Reapply Periodically: Sunscreen can wash off, especially if you swim, sweat or towel dry yourself. Reapply sunscreen to the tattooed area every two hours or more often if needed. Be gentle when applying sunscreen to avoid irritating the tattoo.

Take cover: Always, if possible, wear clothing that covers your tattoo when in the sun. Long-sleeved shirts and lightweight trousers can provide good protection. A wide-brimmed hat can also help protect the tattooed area and your face from the sun.

Find Shade: Stay in the shade during the hottest time of the day, usually between 10 am and 4 pm. If you’re at the beach or in an open area, bring an umbrella or use the natural shade from trees.

Avoid Sun Beds: Sun beds emit harmful UV radiation that can damage your tattoo and increase the risk of sunburns. It’s best to avoid sun beds altogether.

Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration can help your skin maintain its health. Drink plenty of water, especially when outdoors in the sun.

Consider Specialized Products for Tattoos: Some companies produce products specifically designed to protect tattoos from the sun. These products often contain additional ingredients to help maintain the brightness of the tattoo ink. Ask your tattoo artist for recommendations.

Routinely Use a Moisturizer: Keeping your skin moisturized can help maintain the appearance of your tattoo. Dry or flaking skin is more susceptible to sun damage. Use a special moisturizer for tattoos or a fragrance-free lotion that is hypoallergenic.

Be Careful When Swimming: Chlorine in and seawater can damage tattoos, especially if they are freshly healed. Apply a waterproof sunscreen before swimming, and make sure to thoroughly clean and moisturize your tattoo after swimming to remove any chemical or salt residue.
